In case of a 1911 or guns with thumbsafety, safety is always on until drawn. In a Glock and XD (amongst others) the safety is deactivated when pulling the trigger.

I'm most used to my Sig P226, which has no external safety. It of course has a firing pin block safety, sine gaged only via the trigger. I carry this in DA mode. As long as the gun is holstered with the trigger covered, no problem. My HK's do have safeties, and I do tend to use them. But not cocked and locked, safety on, and DA.
